Up!Grade Learning Summer 2023 Evening Extensive Writing Course for 8th - 10th Grade
Join us for Up!Grade Learning’s Summer 2023 Extensive Writing Course! Our 6-week virtual program will have live instructors and be broken into three sections covering descriptive, narrative, and book report writing. Students will work on each topic intensively for 2 weeks and have the opportunity to strengthen their writing skills throughout the summer!
*Courses may be taken separately or all together*
Descriptive: How to Expand Your Writing

June 19-30 6pm - 7pm
We will be covering how to expand students’ writing through reviewing:
- The basics of descriptive writing (Figurative, imagery, and diction)
- Formal writing structure
- Foundational rhetorical devices (similes, metaphors, personification, etc.)
Narrative: Exploring Voice and Expression

July 3-14 6pm - 7pm
We will be covering the foundation of narrative writing through building on top of our descriptive course and practice:
- Cohesive narrative composition
- Peer-editing and proofreading skills
- Different narative styles and forms
Book Report Camp: Cause and Effect Essays for Gary Paulsen’s Hatchet

July 17-28 6pm - 7pm
Our required text for the summer will be Gary Paulsen’s Hatchet in which students will put the skills of descriptive and narrative writing into practice and learn to:
- Practice reading comprehension
- Analyze textual evidence and authorial intent
- Employ close reading skills
